Ahoy there!

I'm pretty sure I need this fabric. It's got lobsters on it for heaven's sake! Lobsters! Who doesn't need a lobster dress? I'm not sure what pattern to use...

Unless it needs to be a skirt? Thoughts? And continuing the crustacean theme, a crab shirt!

Due to the expansion of the bike family I've not had much room for sewing but I got some pretty pretty fabric from mum for a sundress so I might have a little sewing bee soon. Though kitten plus sewing probably = disaster. It's hard enough typing this!- Toodle Pip!

I am not a tree!

I've been saying this a lot lately. Along with 'hands are not a toy'. (Also hair, glasses, boobs, frocks and shoes.) Jens Otto is completely bonkers. I love him to bits but - completely and utterly bonkers.

He's a true cyclist, just like his namesake.

Cat fishing app! I did almost kill him yesterday. I was wrapping my Christmas presents and it really was hard to do with a kitten underfoot. Not to mention that I'd left it to the last minute, was in a rush and had to use nail scissors because I'd lost our kitchen scissors. I was almost in tears!

Mum took us out to Kamel for dinner last night, along with a library workmate. Yum yum yum! Michael's a vegetarian so we sampled lots of dishes we don't normally order: sweet potato and sesame felafel, field mushrooms with feta, patatas bravas, grilled watermelon and pepper salad. Mmmmm... Yes, I nearly exploded with excitement! Little Monkey Face now lives with us. He's ever so tiny and still a little bit shy.

He has about an hour of crazy play before he has a big snooze. He sleeps a lot!

He's scared of the big cats. George is pretty chilled but Lyle wonders if he can eat him. We love him!- Toodle Pip!

Thursday night is kitty cat night! But I haven't been able to find a nice little bed for him so I think he's going to live in a cardboard box with some snugglies. Big cats have been warned but I know they're going to be extremely pissed off. Gone all nesty and bought new towels. Fuchsia pink happy happy!

Bought bed linen a while back and only just been told it's out of stock. Cotton box = avoid. Absolutely hopeless. And very disappointing. Potential bedlinen no 2:

I'm not sure though. I've gone all florally! But it might need to wait until post Christmas. The crochet and I have come to an understanding. I take it a bit more slowly and it will get done when it's done. I'm actually enjoying it very much and miss it when I run out of wool. Still not even half way through though.- Toodle Pip!

Sunny days

Two weeks until Monkey Face joins our family. Got lots of kitty stuff to stock up on.

Happy making is packing away my winter clothes. I sure do like brown. Now it's all cotton florals. Yes, I know it rained on the weekend but I'm still hopeful! Probably won't get to sew again until Mount Crochet has been conquered. Had my crafternoon tea on the weekend. One of the ladies said my crochet technique was 'cute'. I think that's old lady code for 'completely wrong'.- Toodle Pip!

Monkey face

Full of naughties!

Tickle me

Well I'm feeling a whole heck of a lot better. Spending the day watching Elvis movies. He's looking pretty hunky in Tickle Me. And there's lots of cute girls go go dancing in short shorts. Don't ask me what it's about because I'm not really sure.

I've been crocheting up a storm. Seriously, this could be my one and only crochet project. It's going to take for freaking ever. By an optimistic estimate I'll be done around Christmas. At my last crafternoon tea we were talking smugly about modern crafters seeking instant gratification. I hearby take back all my words. Instant grat sounds pretty good right now. If you've ever been given something handmade - treasure it. A lot of love and effort goes into it.

My crochet pancake stack. One 6th of the way through!hands = sore. Toodle Pip!

Feeling poorly

I've had a wretched cold for a week now. It well and truly sucks. I am pretty bored with it. I've started a crochet project and it's going so slowly I think I'll be doing it for the rest of my life. Sneak peek when I've made some headway... - Toodle Pip!

Excuse me, where are my marigolds?

Turns out possums like marigolds. A lot. The Victory Garden is shared with the neighbours and of course Grandma Poss has only eaten the marigolds on our side. She’s also had a nibble on the dill so I’ve had to pop a very vintage cut down fizzy bottle over the top of it. I’m pretty sure that won’t stop hungry possums though. I’ve popped a petunia in a pot out there to see if it will last and it seems to be un-nibbled – so far. As for the crochet - the blasted thing has been undone so many times it's looking a bit sad. And I'm a bit worried that my colour scheme isn't very tasteful. Very make do and mend cheerful. But we are making progress! And here's little monkey face. Three weeks old and now an explorer.

Sleepy Sunday

Two weeks until Monkey Face joins our family! Off my head with excitement! Happy making was packing away my winter clothes. I sure do like brown. Now everything is crisp cotton frocks and shirts. Even though it rained yesterday. Haven't sewn in ages and probably won't until Mount Crochet has been conquered. I had my craft club today and one of the women said my crochet technique was 'cute'. I think that's old lady code for completely wrong. 1/3 of the way through. Christmas deadline not in the slightest bit feasible.

Melbourne Cup

Apparently I talked in my sleep the other night about shopping for a pony. One with spots. Then I drew Jakkalberry in the library sweep - one of our names for Jack Jack. Then he came third so I'm going to buy this 1940s brooch with my (modest) winnings. It was all meant to be. - Toodle Pip!

Little Veggie Patch Co.

Down at the start of Chapel Street there's a veggie nursery where I've been spending a little bit too much money. As you've seen, we don't have much room for veggies but I think I can squeeze in some herbs (parsley, dill, basil), heartsease, marigolds and tomato plants. Apparently Cup day is the day to do it so I hope it stops raining by then! Georgie's been in a rumble and it looks like he's hurt himself. Looking very sorry for himself. So trip to the vet soon. And I got a new Scotty dog!

What was sent to the soldier's wife...

...from Brussels in Belgium land? From Brussels, he sent her the laces so fair, to have and to wear, those laces so fair from Brussels in Belgium land. (Kurt Weil) The Australian Comforts Fund has certainly lifted its game: I got a care package from my mum, lately back from Europe. Beats a woolen balaclava. Hand painted vintage buttons from Brantôme in the Dordogne! A Delft dish! A beautiful handmade lace collar from Bruges! A thimble from Haarlem! I have a kind of thimble collection. Kind of because I didn't collect them so much as pinch them from my mum. I had hoped for one from Kim as a wedding present, as in ye olden times, before wedding rings, a thimble was given as a token of betrothal. Clearly I didn't drop enough hints! The collar is from my stepfather for my birthday and it is absolutely stunning. Think I have the perfect late 1930s pattern dress to make for it. There were also some chocolates but by the time i came to taking the photo there wasn't much to show you! I'm a lucky girl. AND Jens Otto is joining us at Christmas time!

Cat pile!

Peggy had her kittens this morning! One of these little pussycats is our Jens Otto von Radfahrer. We're hoping it's the little black one. So excited. He'll be joining us just before Christmas. Doesn't Peggy look pleased with herself?! Toodle Pip!

Victory garden

It's a rare sunny day in Melbourne and I've been out in our Victory garden. I planted some oregano and parsley and sussed out some room for tomatoes. The poppies are just about to flower and the pineapple sage is thriving. We think there's room to expand a little but probably not enough for a full vegetable garden. I would so dearly love to grow our own veggies.

It's looking pretty crowded but there's a bit of room at the back that you can't see. Our local health food store is currently selling cheap herbs so I think I can squeeze some more things in! - Toodle Pip!

Just when you're feeling a bit low, your husband comes home and presents you with a bunch of your favourite flowers and buys you a Scottie dog brooch to add to your collection. Look at this little guy who's on his way to me!

And apparently the kittenses might be due this weekend!- Toodle Pip!

A little flower

See this little lady? She's a homeless kitty currently being fostered by Miss Tallulah Porkchop (who does an AWESOME job looking after cats that need some love). She doesn't have a name yet; she may be Violet or Primrose. She's now called Peggy - a good 1940s name. And she's expecting little kitty cats any day now! I can't wait because I suspect one of them may be joining our household. More to her story, she was abandoned in a house when her owners moved out, no food or water and babies on the way. Disgusting behaviour.

A knotty problem

I held a crafternoon tea at the library on Sunday and - apart from having an absolutely delightful time - I got shown how to crochet. I came home to start my first pot holder and now I don't seem to be able to do it... I've spent hours trying, undoing and trying again. I've stopped in to Little Sparrow for direction, came home super confident - and messed up again. I just don't seem to be able to do it. Sigh. Back to Little Sparrow again tomorrow. - Toodle Pip!

Dress your family in corduroy and denim

First, get him some jeans - 1937 Roamer pant from Pike Brothers. A little English tailoring firm made US uniforms during the war and ended up a German company.

Keep him warm with a Schiesser undershirt. A Swiss company started in 1875.

Top it off with a North Sea Engineer jumper. A new company created by a collector of vintage military and workwear their range is inspired by submariner uniforms of WW2.

Get him some 1000 mile Wolverine boots. They've been making boots for over 125 years. These are inspired by turn of the century work boots.

You will of course have knitted him socks using a WW2 Red Cross pattern.

A Japanese selvege senim work apron for when he's fixing your bike.

He'll need this - a Specialised Globe.

And a Carradice Kelbrook bag for carrying your picnic lunch. They've been making bike bags for over 70 years.

And of course, to make sure he's on time for your date, a Rolex Explorer watch, as worn by Sir Edmund Hillary.

New wheels

Look what's arriving this week! Took it on a test ride during my lunch break in the sunshine. I was so happy! No idea where it's going to live though... Toodle Pip!

Tutti fruiti

Dear PS3 - please play my DVD. I came back to work to find that the entire Deanna Durbin DVD collection had arrived. Hurrah! Except that I can't seem to watch anything. Sigh. First day at work wasn't so bad. I was a bit scared to go at first (I dreamt that I got in trouble for parking the library horse in the wrong spot and having it towed...) It turns out that I work with some real nice people and got lots of support. I even got to leave work early to come home and watch a DVD. And you know how that turned out. On the way home I saw a bunch of mini bananas that just screamed Carmen Miranda. I'm sure I can do something with them. It just might not be something I can leave the house in! - Toodle Pip!

Home from holidays! And still struggling with jet lag... It's so good to be back with the kitty cats and in our little apartment. Though it would be good to get a bit of sunshine! I'm so happy to be home I'm feeling very nesty. We got new bed linen. It has palm trees and hula girls on it and I love it. Though it's almost impossible to find colored sheets - everything is taupe, cream, stone, ivory, white or parchment. So if anyone sees some yellow queen sized cotton sheets please let me know! I'm very keen on yellow at the moment. My mum knitted me this: Here's some more yellow inspiration... - Toodle Pip!
